joomla security free component admin tools

Recently one of my websites got hacked, luckily I had just taken a complete copy of the website files to my local drive and was able to re-upload the copied files.  However when I did the site was a bit of a mess and it took me 3 days and nights to update components, plugins and get everything working in harmony again.  I HATE HACKERS!

Due to this very annoying breech of my Joomla Security I decided to go on the hunt for additional security to make my websites more bullet-proof and also to understand how hackers got through the basic security for joomla.  I found tonnes of interesting info and compiled the following list that would make my joomla websites more secure but it seemed alot of work to manage and keep up-to-date, so I then went further to find a component to do the majority of the work for me and I found one Admin Tools.  I’ll get into Admin Tools further in my post but firstly here is the list of items recommended to keep your joomla website secure.

Joomla Security Tips List

1 Use a quality ISP (Internet Service Provider) for hosting

2 Do not use ISP joomla 1 click install, install the Joomla manually yourself

3 Keep remote files permissions at 644 or tighter

4 Keep directory permissions at 755 or tighter

5 Always install the latest version of Joomla

6 Enable htaccess.txt by renaming to .htaccess

7 Keep Joomla core files up-to-date and/or apply security patches to your version

8 Keep all 3rd party extensions updated – Components and Plugins

9 Use strong passwords – 12 characters long using upper and lower case, numbers and symbols

10 Change super admin password on a regular basis

11 Create new super admin account, once logged in delete the default joomla super admin account

12 Keep your PC anti-virus updated, run regular checks

13 Use additional anti-virus software like Malware Bytes and its Free

14 Enable and Disable FTP access via your ISP control panel – only enable when you need it

15 Make backups of your database(s) to public_html directory regularly

16 Make backups of your website files to public_html directory regularly

OK so I now know the recommendations for additional Joomla Security but it seems alot to manage especially when I have several websites built on Joomla.  So I dug a bit deeper and there is was a component that easily manages the majority of the items listed above ‘Admin Tools’

So what exactly is Admin Tools and what features does it provide that match Joomla Security recommendations above.

Admin Tools is an all-in-one solution to update your Joomla! site, perform maintenance tasks and enhance your site’s security.

Ensure you read the documentation before installing and setting  up, I recall I had to read it a couple of times but then when I installed and following the step-by-step instructions – it was very easy.
